Computer suddenly restarting

Postby Sublevel4 on Sat Nov 07, 2009 2:15 pm

Wonder if anyone else is having this problem. When I use Emule, my PC seems to restart suddenly and randomly. It doesn't close down properly. It just turns itself off suddenly and then reboots. I have a good anti-virus program (Kaspersky). So far I have only seen this sudden rebooting happen when I am using Emule and I am now not using Emule very much at all because of it. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do to fix the problem?

Thanks in advance!

I take it you are on XP if so go to start then run type in " msconfig " with-out the quotes. then when it pops up go to the startup tab un-tick all boxs, reboot and see if that is the cause if it is then its something on startup, so 1 at a time Re-tick each box 1 at a time reboot see if it crashes, then when it do, it was last thing you ticked. this is will take some time, so do 1 box at a time to eliminate the crash. hope that helps :wink:n

Doesnt sound good, perhaps a temporary file is corrupted and when the PC scans the folder it is in the reboot happens (shrugs) a wild guess but perhaps try too copy the eMule folder in program folders to another drive or space on your pc and see if its rebooted when this happens also?

Also anti virus is not bullet proof nothing is when it comes to trojans etc, so dont rely on it as the end all be all i.e. somethign u have downloaded froma search in eMule or a site somewhere may have something not liking to be accessed when AV is on a defensive mechanism perhaps or you might just have a bad stick of RAM ? :chin:

i used to have a similar problem a few years ago. i used to keep virtual memory set low to gain speed. then after emule would run anattended for some time, when i would come back and try to bring it up, the computer would crash and re-boot. another possibility is a dirty cpu cooler fan, letting the cpu get too hot, causing problems.
to try virtual memory increases, go to control panel, sytem, then click on advanced. at the bottom is settings. i use a size double my ram.

I wouldn't think it was any of the above problems, it sounds like one of the services eMule interacts with is causing the error. What version of eMule are you using and what OS?

Try reinstalling eMule, I'd recommend grabbing MorphXT. If you don't want to lose your upload credits download the binary version and just copy/paste it over the existing installation folder.

Thanks for all the input guys, I will be looking into it. Any more details or suggestions would be welcome.

FYI, I have v0.49c and use Windows XP. I don't mind losing my upload credits, because I recently (2-3 weeks ago) reformatted my PC.

Check for driver problems with your Ethernet card.
