Jade Goody, the media and your opinion.

Postby drmcscott on Mon Mar 23, 2009 5:44 pm

I was not a fan of Jade Goody and begrudge the fact i even knew her when she should of been forgotten with all the other reality "stars".

I don't hate her, nor wished death on her like so, so many others. Although i thought the press coverage on her death was, on the whole... unsavory. Yes i realise it was for her kids an money an all. My opinion is that we should of even known the thick, racist moron that gave us nothing apart from her tiny views and ignorant bile.

It must be indicative of society if people really look up to someone like that and want to know more.

So i want to know what other people think about it.

NOT to judge other peoples opinions, or comment on them. Dont wanna see a load of nitpicking and arguments between each other.
Just to say what they thought of her and why you think she deserved the coverage and interest in her life in general. Not just at the end.

Right I'll take a piece of the flak here, at the moment I have a dear friend that is dying from cancer - it started in her breast and spread to the rest of her body, I'm more than a little upset about it but she knows how to act with dignity in the face of adversity.

I'll try and formulate a decent arguement to put my point across but if I go off an a tangent please forgive me.

On the plus side all this happening has brought cervical cancer into the public eye.

On the other hand this has made us look like a country of ghouls - her obituary was in 'Hello' before she died, there is something fundementally wrong with the media in this country.

During her life do you think she was a good role model for kids? Really? She amassed an £8m fortune by being a freakshow - selling everything she could through the media, she acted no better than a common whore. She was a racist, she was a bully and she was ignorant, is this really how you'd like you kids to grow up, thinking East Anglia was abroad.

So while you're sitting there and judging think, would that be a person who could influence my childs life and would that influence be positive?

So, if any of you think Jade Goody (the lass who got her tits out on Big Brother for 15 minutes of fame) is a positive role model I'd like to hear your arguement.

I wanted to keep it separate from your thread UKmomma because i don't think its fair to hijack it with this argument.

I thought deadpans viewpoint was interesting and thought provoking.

Thanks drmcscott. It's good to debate :D Glad you have opened up a thread for it, and will be interesting to hear others opinions on Jade.

I have never been a big Jade fan, and the way she behaved on Big Brother was just foul. But it also makes me wonder just how much of that on Big Brother was edited. Did we see the real Shilpa Shetty? Because do we really know what drove Jade to bite at her like that? I don't know.. maybe it was just spite. But also Jade did make amends with her, and ended up being really good friends. How much of it was done to make good tv by Big Brother for a start? Right now though, to me, and i have no doubt to other women as well, i see her as a brave woman for the horror she has been through in the last months since she found she had cervical cancer. A tumor the size of a rugby ball. I think for a lot of women over the country she has been an inspiration, and also with the coverage of how the screening should not be just for 25 year olds and over.

Some people think that she has been some sort of money grabbing bitch over the last few months. Well, for the people who think that... put yourself in her shoes for a minute. If you found out that you had just weeks to live, and you had 2 young children and you had the chance to sell your story to Hello and every other womens mag out there for a huge fortune. Would you not do it? I know i would if i knew at the end of the day it was going help secure my kids future.

TBH I don't think she did it solely for the kids, she saw an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands, she reportedly already had £8m and a £5m house, she's got what two kids and a jailbird husband? Even if she could have settled for leaving them £2.67 million EACH which in anybodys eyes is a fair chunk of change thats without the house - give that a little bit of interest and those kids would have had a good £3.5m each when they came of age. Thats better than six numbers on the lottery most weeks, those kids were never going to be poor.

I still stand by the fact she was not a good role model for children, she was obviously one of Thatchers children - everything has a price, she could have and probably should have retired gracefully into her private world but she chose to sell every part of the last few months of her life.

Again, I point toward Wendy Richards whos cancer was announced on the news, she had a small ceremony to get married before she passed and then she passed away, thats all that was reported on the news. Was her life as a talented acress worth any less than Jade Goody? Ms Richards didn't have Max Clifford for an agent though.

The fact that any paper or magazine bought her story makes us (the English) look even worse, printing an obituary before she was even dead. The problem is with them as well if no one was prepared to print the story she wouldn't have had a market and thats what makes us look like ghouls, the fact that people were prepared to buy into this and go out and get the magazines is outragous.

To be honest I stopped taking a paper until she passed away.

dunno what she did during bb, didn't like that show some 9 years ago, i just think she is either a big insult to society or a least to any other cancer patient in the world....there is absolutely no justification for her getting all that attention, "fame" or money....otherwise, you have to give every person suffering from this sh*t the chance to write a book, go on "jerry springer" or whatever talkshows you guys watch and make 8m themselves...everybody thinks of their kids, but imagine those kids in 10 years...looking back....starting with bb...seeing their mom's breasts on national tv....

the attention is just unjustified and, like i said, an insult to anyone bearing their fate with dignity and help from friends and family, not media for the masses....
